Counting calories & why we don't have time for that

This is not the part where I give you meal plans or tell you what 'Kayla' workout I'm about to conquer. Just listen. 


I am really passionate about women empowerment. I think it's important. I think it's rad. I am also really passionate about empowering teenage girls. When I think back to my high school days, they were rough. Braces, so insecure, I just wanted a boy to ask me out, you know just the normal things. I felt all the normal insecurities except for one, I was never trying to be skinny or lose weight. In fact, I was trying to gain weight. In Luge, weight means speed so when I started lifting at about 14-15, I was pounding the protein and peanut butter afterward in order the put on as much weight as possible. At the time, I did not realize this out of the ordinary. I thought everyone was trying to train for something and put on as much muscle as possible. So those days of looking in the mirror trying to cinch up those skinny jeans, I never lived that life. There were a lot of times I was insecure about how muscular I was, I always avoided tank tops in public. Boys would ask me to arm wrestle and it would genuinely hurt my feelings. I always wore boy's clothes because my back would rip seems on tight girl's clothes. I felt super masculine and I hated it. I came to a point where I had to decide: stop caring and get after your dreams or keep wasting energy caring about what you look like. I decided that I wanted to go to the Olympics more than I wanted to feel feminine. Also, I worked dang hard for those arms and it was time to just own it. Here is some proof. I had to add the pic of the old man. We met him in Austria and he was a 70 year old body builder. 

Ok so why is this important? Because I wish someone would have told me these things when I was younger. I wasted so much time worrying about what I looked like until I just learned to own it. It is hard enough being a girl and when you bring body image into it, it's game over. Stop worrying about what you look like and start worrying about the person that you want to be. Don't be afraid of food, don't look at the amount of calories that are on the menu, it will drive you insane. Eat what makes you happy and don't worry about the rest. People are always surprised by how much food I can eat, it's a skill I harvested when I was training. V proud.


WHAT I HAVE LEARNED:

  • I really like being strong

  • I also love to eat, I can pound food more than most guys I know

  • Gaining weight is a lot harder than losing weight

  • What people think of me and my body is none of my business

  • Jeans will never fit right so stick to leggings
